Do you prefer body oil or body lotion? Which one do you think is better?
Personally, I only ever recommend body oil. Some people don’t like the feeling of oil on their body, and I get that. It feels greasy if you use too much, but it’s so much better for both your skin and your health and here’s why…
First off, all lotions contain water. Any product that has water must contain a preservative (most of which are synthetic). Remember that products applied to your skin enter into your bloodstream and do not get processed by your liver. That mean that those chemicals float around your body without ever being filtered. 😐
The bowl in this photo has water in it. Then I poured some oil (Sacred Calm) into it. Notice how the oil and water separate and the Sacred Calm floats on top. If I was to put in more oil, the oil would completely cover the entire surface of the water, floating on top and locking the water underneath the oil. This would actually help prevent the water from evaporating and could also help protect the water from bacteria invasion.
Now, think of how our body is mostly made of water 💦 Our skin contains water, that when not protected, evaporates into the air (called trans-epidermal water loss), often leaving us with dehydrated skin, especially in Fall and Winter. But when we apply oil to our entire body and our face, the oil covers the water, just like in this photo. It locks moisture into the skin, protecting it and keeping it hydrated and moisturized.
Lotions are water-based, so how can that truly hydrate the skin if it’s not actually locking in moisture? It can’t! In fact, most lotions evaporate from the skin, leaving your skin behind with its nasty synthetics.
Plant oils are completely natural. They are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that feed and nourish the skin. Those beneficial ingredients also enter your body via your skin – you literally feed your skin when you apply plant oils to your body. Lotions contain synthetics… something you don’t really want to feed your skin or body.
Ayurveda says that you should never apply anything to your skin
that you cannot eat, and I couldn’t agree more.
If you struggle with the feeling of body oil on your skin, just remember that a little goes a VERY long way. A body oil should completely absorb into your skin with the right amount. So if you’re feeling a little greasy after applying oil to your body, you’re just simply using too much. With the perfect amount of oil, your skin and your body will thank you!
