As an aesthetician who graduated from my aesthetics program in 2003, I was taught the conventional way of skin care. In fact, most aestheticians today are still taught the conventional way, so when I very first heard of oil cleansing, I will admit that I shook my head. “Seriously, cleaning all skin types with oil? Never!”. That’s what I thought at the time, until I moved my career into the field of holistic aesthetics.
If you are new to holistic skin care, chances are that you are also new to the method of oil cleansing. As we continue to shift from mainstream beauty to holistic beauty, you’ll begin hearing a lot more about oil cleansing.
What is Oil Cleansing?
Over the past few years, you have probably heard a lot about oil pulling, which involves swishing oil around your mouth in order to clean and detoxify your teeth and gums. Oil Cleansing is the ritual of using oil, such as jojoba, sunflower, hemp seed oil or a combination of oils to wash your face. During this cleansing ritual, you wash your face using oil in the exact same way that you would wash your face with any other cleanser.
It sounds crazy, right? Washing your face with oil? Trust me for a minute here and read on…
The R Devine Skin Care line has two different cleansers, one of them being an oil cleanser. The question that I get asked most often about it is, “will oil cleansing actually clean my skin?”. The answer is YES!
Why You Should Oil Cleanse
Your skin will be cleaner
In fact, oil cleansing will clean your skin better than most cleansers. Jojoba oil makes a fabulous cleansing oil, which actually cleans the skin extremely efficiently. You see, oil has smaller molecules in it, which means that those molecules can dive deep down into the skin, cleaning your skin at a deeper level. Most mainstream cleansers only clean the skin at the surface. As we know, the surface of the skin is just dead skin cells, so cleaning only those skin cells does not do a whole lot of good in the long term. By using ingredients that dive deep into the skin, you’re cleansing the skin all the way down to the lower layers, unlike most other cleansers.
It will nourish your skin
Down at these lower levels of the skin are live, healthy skin cells. When you start cleansing these deeper living cells with a cleanser that contains natures most potent vitamins and nutrients, you’re feeding those cells the nutrients that they need to become healthier by the time they get to the surface of the skin. Healthy cells at the surface of the skin results in even, radiant and glowing skin. Cleaning and nourishing at once – tell me that’s not natures best form of multi-tasking!
It will remove ALL of your makeup – every. single. bit of it!
You have not removed your makeup successfully until you remove with oil. How often do you wash your face at night, only to find dark circles of makeup still under your eyes the next morning? This will NOT happen with oil. Seriously! All you have to do is read the reviews of our Sacred Garden Makeup Remover on our website to see that this baby works like no other! It cleans away the most stubborn makeup.
To successfully remove your makeup, take a few drops of our Sacred Garden Makeup Remover onto your fingertips, massage it into your eyes to loosen your makeup (remember it’s 100% completely natural so it’s safe for your eyes, unless you have an allergy), then remove the oil and your makeup with a cotton pad. Voila, 100% makeup free!
It helps clear acne
This is the hardest one to believe, I know! But, do you remember high school chemistry and the old rule of “like dissolves like”? If like dissolves like, that means oil dissolves oil.
If you look at any mainstream product, the first ingredient on the bottle is, what? Water! Now, think about when you cook using a frying pan. When you’re done with the oily frying pan, if you just rinse it with water, where is that oil going? No where! The oil stays in the pan because water cannot remove oil. When using water to remove oil, you HAVE to have a harsh soap of detergent added to the water in order for it to remove the water. Well, guess what? When you use harsh soaps and detergents on your oily skin, it soaks ALL of the oil up in your skin, but your skin needs that oil in order to function properly. When you keep stripping your skin of its natural oils, your skin will start over producing oil in order to compensate. This becomes a vicious oily cycle.
Now if you use oil to dissolve your oil, your skin doesn’t need to over produce oil because it’s being fed with the oil that it needs in order to function properly. Therefore, your skin starts overproducing oil and balances itself, in turn clearing up your acne!
It moisturizes dry skin
Dry skin is a skin type that is lacking oil (Note: dehydrated skin is a lack of moisture… there is a difference there). In order for it to become balanced, it needs oil! If your skin is lacking oil, using water-based cleansers and water-based moisturizers is not going to properly balance your skin. Instead, you need to feed the skin oil using an oil cleanser and oil-based serums or moisturizers. By feeding the skin with oil, you’re helping to replenish the oil that dry skin is lacking.
Is it for you? Yes!
With all of this being said, I am not going to lie, not everyone likes oil cleansing when they first start. For anyone used to foaming cleansers, it’s a really strange feeling using an oil, and it can take quite awhile to get use to. But, I can assure you that if you stick with it for at least 28 days (one full life cycle of your skin cells), that you will slowly fall in love with oil cleansing once you see how radiant it makes your skin. In fact, you’ll probably never want to look at a conventional cleanser again!
How to Oil Cleanse
In order to oil cleanse, here’s what you need to do:
- Wet your face with water
- Add about a quarter size amount of Sacred Calm Soothing Cleanser + Serum into your hands
- Before applying the oil to your skin, place your hands in front of your face and breathe in deeply. Sacred Calm has an intoxicating smell that is so good for both your mind and body.
- Massage the oil all over your face and neck, deeply into skin for approximately 60 seconds
- Apply a few drops of water to your skin and continue to massage for another 30 seconds
- Take a wet, warm/hot face cloth or towel and rest it on your face for a few moments
- Remove the oil from the surface of your skin with the cloth/towel
- If needed, apply a few more drops of Sacred Calm to your skin for additional moisture
It is important to note that not all oils are created equal. Coconut oil has been really big on the internet over the past few years, but it rates a 5 for comedogenicity, meaning that if you are acne-prone, coconut oil will very likely make you break out. It is important to use oils that really closely mimic the skins natural oils, and also rate either a 0 or 1 for comedogenicity, meaning that they’re very unlikely to clog your pores.
Again, I promise you that after only a short while of oil cleansing, you’ll see why more and more people are loving this cleansing ritual!
